About CalcFence

CalcFence is a free, independent set of calculators for planning a fence project — posts, rails, pickets, panels, gates, concrete, and installed cost, all in one place. Every calculator publishes its formula on the page itself, so you can see exactly how a number was produced rather than trusting a black box.

What CalcFence Is

CalcFence covers two kinds of questions people ask before building a fence: "how much material do I need" and "what will this cost." The quantity calculators turn a fence length, height, and style into a materials list — posts, rails, pickets, panels, and concrete bags. The cost calculators turn the same inputs into an estimated installed price range by material, height, and state, split between materials and labor.

Every number on every page comes from a documented formula, shown directly beneath the results. There's no hidden markup logic and no attempt to steer you toward a particular material or supplier — the goal is a useful estimate you can take to a lumberyard, a fencing contractor, or your own weekend project plan.

What CalcFence Is Not

CalcFence is not a contractor, a fencing supplier, or a permitting authority. The calculators produce estimates based on standard industry rules of thumb — post spacing, bury depth, waste factors, regional cost indexes — and real projects vary based on soil conditions, local code, terrain, and supplier pricing. Always verify quantities and costs with a local supplier or licensed contractor before ordering material or signing a contract, and check your local building department for permit and setback requirements before you dig.

How Numbers Are Checked

Every formula used across the site is documented in our guides, including the fence post depth and frost line reference, the concrete-per-post calculation, and the standard post-spacing and material-count rules used in the tools. Calculations are tested against the formulas as published, and cost figures are refreshed periodically from public pricing references — each cost page notes what it's based on.
