Terminal Posts vs Line Posts
A chain link run uses two post types. Terminal posts sit at every end, corner, and gate opening and anchor the fabric under tension — they're always the larger, heavier post in the system. Line posts run between terminals at up to 10-ft spacing and simply support the fabric and top rail without carrying tension load, which is why line posts can be a lighter gauge than terminal posts.
How the Chain Link Fence Calculator Works
- Count terminal posts: 2 per straight run end, 1 per corner, and 2 per gate opening.
- Count line posts: divide the fence length by 10 feet (the standard maximum spacing) and subtract 1 for the posts falling between terminals.
- Top rail: order in 10.5-ft or 21-ft sticks — sticks needed = fence length ÷ 10.5, rounded up.
- Fabric: sold in 50-ft rolls — rolls needed = fence length ÷ 50, rounded up.
- Tension hardware: 1 tension bar per terminal-post side the fabric ends on, plus tension bands at roughly 1 per foot of fence height minus 1 (3 minimum) on each bar.
Worked example — 100 feet, one straight run, no corners: line posts = (100 ÷ 10) − 1 = 9, plus 2 terminal posts at the run ends = 11 posts total. Top rail = 100 ÷ 10.5 = 9.5, rounded up to 10 sticks. Fabric = 100 ÷ 50 = 2 rolls.

A 100-ft straight run has 2 tension bars (one at each end), so total tension bands run 6 at 4 feet, 10 at 6 feet, and 14 at 8 feet. Waste and Ordering
Chain link fabric and top rail are sold in fixed roll and stick lengths, so round every quantity up to the next full unit rather than adding a percentage waste factor — a 100-ft run needing 2 rolls of fabric still needs to buy 2 full 50-ft rolls even though only slightly over one roll's worth of fabric is used. Order a few spare tension bands and ties, since they're inexpensive and easy to lose during installation.
